I decided to take a trip to the Hepworth in Wakefield to prompt some ideas and just have a little explore of somewhere new. We luckily arrived on time to do an hour or so tour around the gallery and get talked though some, mainly Barbara Hepworth's key pieces of the collection. They had amazing room with lots of photos of construction and production of her work and the progression of materials she used. The most informing elements of the tour was explained through the way Hepworth uses line (mainly through string) and spherical holes through her work to draw the eye through the piece. This is something I will consider when working, I this will be a lovely way to weave my inspiration from her work through to my own. It was also fascinating to have a look at her two-dimensional pieces on paper, and analyse how she works with composition - she produces non-linear pattern, her sketches have a clear organic formation to them yet also are measured and precise. I think her work is more effective in a three-dimensional form, but her sketches have the most BEAUTIFUL colour palette and combination which can't always be formed through materials used for sculpture making.

Reflection - Next Steps

During our self made tasks I will use her work to inspire my own, in practical aspects, reflecting on how my work can develop.

I'm also really interested in developing my ceramic skills, so will potentially take a trip down to the college campus where the ceramics facilities are and have a little experiment with some draw up ideas. As experienced before, this is a lengthy process so maybe evolve on ideas that are more time effective.

Alongside my visit to the gallery, I also bought a biographical book on Barbara Hepworth, about her and life coinciding with her work and how she developed the thinking and approach to her work through her career. She became more philosophical as she got older and this very much effected her work. She has some text references and books that influenced her works philosophy and these I would like to potentially use if applicable.

Overall I've found her work super inspiring and am planning to take a trip to Yorkshire sculpture park to look at more sculptural works. As I work predominantly in textiles, I want to explore how I can use textiles based materials within or to form.
