I've been reading a lot about textiles history recently, and have been fascinated and surprised by the deterioration of textiles, and preservationists and historians troubles with conserving textiles. The idea that textiles don't last forever due to their natural fibres biodegrading was a concept I hadn't really given much thought. The idea of decay and deterioration could be an interesting way to explore different materials; looking at natural and manual decay, how forms change over time. Some of the writers in this book are previous or current curators at the Whitworth Art Gallery. Due to it being closed due to COVID-19 I can't visit the gallery, but could potentially get in contact via email and ask about any interesting pieces. I further want to experiment with manipulating materials. Which I will plan for next weeks tasks, where I focus on using practical elements.
